So much has been happening this year. In January, I was nominated to be a member of the National Society for Leadership and Success (NSLS). I checked it out and signed up for the lifetime membership. This was completely different than the International English Honor Society (NEHS) which I was nominated to and joined last year. The NSLS has several steps to achieve induction: Orientation, Leadership Training Day (LTD), 3 Success Network Team (SNT) meetings and watching 3 LIVE Broadcasts of interviews. Through the months, I was able to complete these tasks. Through the creation of a SNT, I met four lovely ladies who live in different times zones, attend different schools, have different lifestyles yet we all had one thing in common. We wanted to succeed in life.
Never before had I been one to make goals, let alone reach those goals. I was content to sit on the sidelines and watch life go past. Not having the confidence to stand up for what I wanted, I let more than four decades pass before I decided to step off that train. I applied to and was accepted to Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). I am in the bachelor’s program for a BA in Creative Writing.
What is astonishing to me is my GPA is a 3.175 at present. It has been up and down, but I’ve been pretty much an A-B student. In high school, I skated by with Bs and Cs without much effort. I’m working hard now, harder than I thought I ever could. It’s showing. Earlier this week I received an email from SNHU stating that I made Honor Roll for the Winter Term! Say WHAT?! I’ve never been on an Honor Roll. Never.
So the goals I made, before joining NSLS, were to get a degree in Creative Writing to improve my skills as an author and an editor. After joining NSLS, my goals are to complete an updated resume, apply to the local publishing companies for editing positions, take my family on its first vacation in more than fifteen years, and have a job waiting for me when I graduate in April, 2023.
I know I’m well on the way to accomplishing these goals. As I do, I’ll create new goals. Two important things I learned in NSLS were:
- The four types of goals: Health, Family, Career, Impact
- SMART goals: S(pecific), M(easurable), A(chievable), R(eward), and T(ime specific)
With these tools, I’ll be able to reach for the stars!
